Our Heritage

Born in Little Anse, Isle Madame, on beautiful Cape Breton Island, Herman Boudreau of C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home Limited, Arichat, Nova Scotia found his way into funeral service during a summer vacation with his wife Norma in July, 1971. They had taken the Fleur de Lis Trail back to Isle Madame (named after the titles of the Queen of France), during a vacation from Everett, Massachusetts where Herman was employed.

Although born and educated in Little Anse, Richmond County, Herman moved North to seek employment. It was in Massachusetts that he met and married the former Norma Elizabeth Hussey in December, 1963. Two sons, Charles Norman and Kevin Michael were born in the United States of America.

Herman's brother Gordon, purchased the former C.A. Boucher Funeral Home and Ambulance Service in Arichat, back in September 1971 and asked Herman if he wouldbe interested in re-locating to Isle Madame, to work for him. Herman at that time, went back to his wife with the idea. At first, Norma was a bit shocked, but the more she thought about it, the better she liked it. The children were small, so the move would not upset them. But for Norma, who had spent all of her life in a big city, the move was met with some trauma.

Gordon, Herman, and Norma all worked together and although times were tough, they all pulled through. Herman received his Funeral Director's license in 1971, followed by his Embalming license in 1993.

In July of 1975, Herman and Normaacquired the Funeral Home and Ambulance Service from his brother Gordon, the former Chez Gordon Funeral Home Ltd., renaming it to the C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home Limited. Norma became a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in 1980, working side by side with her husband. Herman is company President and Norma is the Manager.

Their two sons have grown up with the business. Although Charles (Chuck) became a School Principal, Kevin became a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in 1993, as well as a Paramedic. Kevin's wife, Noreen, is also a licensed Funeral Director, obtaining her license in 2002, and also as well a Paramedic.

A special day for the Boudreau family was on May 1, 1987 when they opened the doors to their newly-renovated, modern funeral home overlooking the beautiful historic Arichat Harbour. Arichat is one of the oldest communities in Nova Scotia. It was a roaring Atlantic seaport in the early 1800's.

In September, 1997 EMC (Emergency Medical Care) purchased the ambulance portion of the Boudreau business.

Since 1975, Norma has trained four apprentice Funeral Directors and two licensed apprentice Embalmers, and she has taken on the apprenticeship of four students from Kingstec Community College Funeral Program in Kentville, Nova Scotia.

Herman and Norma have seen many changes in their thirty-six years in the Funeral Profession and feel more changes are on the horizon.

Norma became the first female President of the Nova Scotia Licensed Embalmers and Funeral Directors Association, serving her term from July, 1996 to July, 1998. She was also Chairman of the Atlantic Provinces Funeral Directors and Service Convention in Sydney, Nova Scotia in September, 1998 and again in Truro, Nova Scotia in 2002. Norma was also presented with a plaque of recognition as the Swiss Air Committee Chairperson who contributed her time for on-site coordination, and professional service on the occassion of the Swiss Air Flight 111 Committal Service held on August 31st and September 1st, 1999. She is presently Secretary/Treasurer of the Funeral Service Association of Nova Scotia and sits on the Board of Directors as the Nova Scotia Representative of the Funeral Service Association of Canada as their Secretary/Treasurer, and is also on the Board of Directors of the Program Advisory Committee of the Funeral Service and Allied Health Program at Kingstec Community College in Kentville.

Also on staff since 1999 at C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home Limited is Derek Marchand who lives in Louisdale, Nova Scotia. A dedicated and professional licensed Funeral Director, who obtained his Funeral Director's license in 2000, also under the apprenticeship of Norma, Derek is an asset to the staff.

C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home is located on beautiful Isle Madame overlooking the Arichat Harbour. Isle Madame is a seventeen square-mile island that is rich in Acadian heritage and also one of the oldest communities in Nova Scotia. Being bilinqual, the staff at C.H.
